Reading Interventions and Approaches

Happy Post SuperBowl everyone! Today's Moodle discussion focuses on the different approaches in reading instruction, as well as the importance of RTI. I am glad that Dr. Rivera added the RTI forum because not many UOG students are aware that it exists in the schools. RTI is not a Special Education teacher's responsibility. It is a school wide effort to decrease referrals and improve reading and math skills. Basically, the general education teacher bears most of the responsibility in implementing the interventions. As future teachers, it is important for us to be aware of the RTI process and also its purpose. I also wanted to thank Jen for sharing her very personal story about her sister's struggles in school. Unfortunately, the reality is that many students have similar experiences because of the lack of training and knowledge. I hope that each of us strive to make the changes necessary when we begin teaching to better serve our students! See you on Thursday (Moodle of course)!

  1. Hi Rachel. Happy belated super bowl Monday. I agree with you on your view with RTI. I think as teachers we're responsible in constantly finding ways to better improve ourselves as teachers. Remember "Learning is on going."

  2. Hi Rachel! You are right, I am one of those that had no idea RTI was already in our school system. It is definitely good to know that these struggling children have this resource. My sister was very unfortunate, however she learned to get around the dyslexia and eventually learned to read...through online chatting! Oh the joy of technology!

  3. It was great reading on RTI, since I had no clue what it was (hence the blank stare last class session). I agree on how we as future educators should be aware of RTI and its process.

  4. Hey Rachel, ya I'm glad Dr. Rivera brought up the importance of the RTI program and how it can be beneficial for our students. This can help us be better prepared in the future when we do become teachers and so we can be familiar with the process and how things work.

  5. Hi Rachel. I am also very glad that RTI was brought up because I had no clue what it was until I read about it on the forum. I was so surprised that there is such a thing. I was having troubles myself and I am sure this would have been a benefit if it was available. For all I know programs were available but I was not recommended too. I'm just pleased that it is out there now and I will be able to help that student who might be feeling the way I did.
