The Common Core and Word Recognition

Hello everyone! Hope you all are having a wonderful week! Word recognition and the common core standards are the focus today. It was nice to get a chance to talk about the common core because by the time we start teaching, these standards will be used in full force. I am a bit worried that I will not be prepared to dissect and interpret the standards successfully since I am more familiarized with the GDOE content standards. It would be helpful if SOE conducts short workshops that explain the common core in detail so future teachers are more prepared. With all the responsibilities that teachers are faced with, it can be very overwhelming. However, I do feel that these changes are necessary in order to improve overall academic success. We have a lot of hard work ahead of us, but we can do it!

  1. Hi Rachel. I'm on the same boat with you on the common core. I'm support that its being implemented, but I don't feel prepared enough to use it in a lesson plan. I think your workshop idea sounds helpful. I know some current teachers are getting training in using the common core, it would be nice to have them also come in and give us some extra training. It would be even better if we can get that training while still being university students, instead of after graduation when we get put in classrooms.

  2. Hi Rachel, ya I'm not sure if we would be well prepared with the common core standards when we become teachers, but I think we just have to really work hard and read up on it more to uunderstand it better. Even attending workshops would be helpful so we can prepare ourselves before we have a classroom of our own.

  3. Hi Rachel! Change is definitely necessary when it comes to improving education. With common core we will have more work as teachers, but all for the benefit of the students. I personally think it should not be as complicated as it sounds, but then again I am not a teacher yet! Hopefully we will get the training as you mentioned, it would definitely be helpful!

  4. I definitely agree about having workshops for explaining common core. Although I think common core is a wonderful idea that has come to the island, I am a bit apprehensive to utilize it myself, being so used to GDOE standards. Hopefully we have enough time and opportunities to practice before we become certified teachers!

  5. Hi Rachel I am feeling the same way too. But I am pleased to see that the school is trying to get us familiarized with the different standards. I know you will become a great teacher and you will get through all the struggles. We can!
