Word Recognition Mini Lesson

Hope you all had a wonderful Valentine's Day! Constructing a short lesson on word recognition was more difficult than I thought. This is because there are so many different ways to teach so many different reading skills. I kept my mini lesson simple because when it comes to phonics and word recognition, it is important to teach and reinforce so that students develop automaticity. Repeating and reviewing are important strategies. It is especially required for young readers and students whose first language is not English. I look forward to reviewing your mini lessons so that I can build my lesson plan resource book!

  1. I agree that repeating and reviewing are important strategies, especially for beginning readers and as you mentioned, those with English as a second language. I never knew how critical repetition was until I saw and experienced it for myself with Kindergarteners, and this was just an art activity! I can imagine teaching content such as reading and word recognition.

  2. Hi Rachel, I enjoyed your lesson. I remember reading about that strategy, I believe it's called chunking. I like how you're having the students create their own family word book. It sounds like a great way to incorporate fine arts.

  3. You are right Rachel this activity was a little difficult but your lesson turned out great. Your ideas are great and having students write, draw, and create their own sources will make it even more memorable.

  4. Hi Rachel, I thought your lesson was simple and effective. By allowing your students to create their own word book was a great idea. That way they can use words they learned and words they already know and share it with the other students.
