Word Recognition!!

For today's assignment we had to make a mini-lesson on word recognition. At first I was a little confused because I was not sure exactly what we were suppose to do. I was expecting to talk about it in class but plans were changed. However, thanks to the internet I was able to find how some teachers work on it with their students in their classroom. So I decided to do the recognition of the numbers and its; word forms. I decided to use the rhyme Once I Caught a Fish Alive to help get the students attention as well as using something familiar. I decided that I can post up the rhyme on the board with both the number and word form. Using repetitive reading, practice writing, and site word recognition using flash cards.
After thinking about what I wanted to do it was simple to complete the lesson. Now I am able to use other rhymes or stories in the same format on introducing other words I would like my students to recognize.

  1. Rhea, I love that rhyme and sing it with my kids often. Yes, the Internet is a great way to find ideas and even sample lessons. With teaching, it is all about sharing and reusing what works for students. This is why I will probably use your idea too when I start teaching!

  2. Rhea I think its great that you're using rhymes. It's a great strategy for memory. I can recite many nursery rhymes from my childhood by heart. Anyway, I enjoyed your lesson especially the I SPY worksheet...great idea. Keep all the great ideas coming :)

  3. Hey Rhea, I really enjoyed your sing a long lesson. It's something that catches their attention and it's something that they would probably be familiar with. I would definitely try something like this with my future students.

  4. Hi Rhea! I too found it difficult to write up a mini lesson plan, especially since I was short on time and had no idea we had an assignment! But I really enjoyed reading your mini lesson! I love to sing and feel that it is a super plus for me to be able to sing along with my students...it's the dancing I have trouble with! I remember using that rhyme with my son and he learned to count from 1 to 10 easily, but I never thought to use it with words! Thanks for the idea!
