During today's session we discussed Marie Clay's emergent reading. I find it very interesting how research has gone into the various ways children are showing early signs they are interested in literacy.
We also discussed different strategies to use in the classroom to promote emergent literacy. There isn't one strategy that improves children's literacy, they need a variety to keep them engaged. This discussion has reminded me of my tutoring sessions at the Lagu Center. I remember having to do different things to try and keep my students' attentions. I found that the kids I worked with enjoyed taking responsibility instead having me do everything for them. For example: they wanted to read aloud for the group, and they wanted to write examples on the board.
I cannot wait to start our practicums in the schools, and incorporate all these strategies we have been discussing. I am excited about somehow trying to incorporate the author's chair and dramatic play. During discussion Dr. Rivera had Angela and Rhea's give a short example of dramatic play. I enjoy the interaction versus just sitting and listening to all lecture. I can't wait to see the rest of their play.
Amanda I am excited to use these ideas too. I really think that this is the information we have been waiting for. What we can use with our students and try another route in case it doesn't work out. Yay!!
ReplyDeleteAmanda, I didn't know you were a tutor! Yes, children really like the feeling of doing something important in the classroom. I hope to find time to volunteer as well. It's a great opportunity to try out strategies we are learning in our courses. I enjoyed the interaction in the class as well!
ReplyDeleteHi Amanda, I too am excited in using these strategies in the classroom. But for now, I am going to try them out with my children at home.
ReplyDeleteHey Amanda, I'm excited about the author's chair too! I have never heard about it until today.
ReplyDeleteHey Amanda, I also want to try these strategies with students and hopefully it’s something that they will really enjoy. That’s good that you have experience with tutoring and getting involved with students at the elementary level.
ReplyDeleteI like how you mentioned children showing early signs of reading. While reading up on emergent reading I was able to assess my four year old and determined that he is ready! I am looking forward to teaching reading in my future classroom! But for now, I'm going to start practicing on my own little four year old guinea pig!
