Effective Approaches of Reading & RtI

After reading article one, it gave me a better understanding on how teachers can teach children to read accurately and rapidly through five components of effective reading instruction. The five components of effective reading instruction are phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. As future educators, it is important that we understand the five essential components of reading, because it helps us teach our students to read using instructional strategies and materials that have proven to be effective.
Another reading material that I enjoyed reading today was on Response to Intervention, also known as  RtI. RtI is a multi-tiered process being used in many school systems to seek ways to provide early assistance to students experiencing academic and/or behavioral difficulty. RtI gives students the support they need, regardless of having a disability or not. With RtI, students will no longer have to "wait to fail" to receive the help they need; it is promised to prevent the over-identification of students for special education.
Within these past couple of weeks of class, I have learned a lot about reading. Reading is the single most important skill children learn at school. With reading, children expand their knowledge and enter any subject or obstacle that they encounter in life.

  1. Hi Angela! You and I have had the opportunity to learn about RTI last semester. I am glad that it is being introduced in other courses besides Special Education. I, too, am learning so much about teaching reading. Since reading comes so naturally for us, we need to understand the process of learning how to read. That way, we can approach instruction in effective ways.

  2. Hey Angela, I agree that we have to understand the five components of reading to help our future students. This will help us becomoe better teachers and it gives us an approach that has been proven to be effective. The RTI program is another positive strategy to help students who are struggling early on and to have them become proficient readers.

  3. You're exactly right Angela. Reading is a very important skill. Its used in all subjects. What is also great about this skill is it can be integrated with any subject, so the skill is always being practiced and perfected.

  4. Hi Angela. As I was reading the material I could not stop but think about 2nd grade and my experience. It was so difficult to see where I was placed because of how I read, but of course I understand. However, I hope that the RTI program will help our local schools so no other child will be put in the same seat I was in. It is very important to know the components of reading but it is also important to zone in on how as students we take it in.

  5. Hi Angela! Before reading the article, I knew very little about RTI. But I'm glad that the schools have implemented it and I hope the parents and teachers use it effectively only to benefit the student. There are many struggling readers on not only Guam but I am sure in the U.S. as well. Programs like these are very beneficial.
