Vocabulary

Today's class discussion was on meaning vocabulary. It was a very informative session especially because vocabulary is such an important component of reading. The different strategies in teaching vocabulary are things that are definitely usable and beneficial. I liked that the idea of having each student introduce a new word to the class. It is a great way to have them not only build their vocabulary, but also become more involved in their learning. Even though I know that teaching reading is challenging especially because of the growing cultural diversity in Guam's schools, I am still very excited to use all my ideas in my classroom. Have a wonderful Thursday everyone! Below is the link that Dr. Rivera has sent me for ideas on teaching aids: http://exceptionalteaching.net/edgaandto.html

  1. That's right Rachel, I was so overwhelmed with the information I was typing down, I forgot to also note the different vocabulary approaches. Personally, I think I really want to try out the traveling dictionary. I'm already planning in my head how the students are going to create it. I'm think maybe half sheets for each word. Then at the end of the school year they can put them in order and compile a dictionary.

  3. Yes I am glad we are getting more information on things that might work especially since we will be student teaching soon. I really like the idea of the teaching aid and creating it to work with your lesson. Thank you for the link.

  4. Hi Rachel! I also liked the idea of the students introducing new words to the class. Like Dr. Rivera said, it helps to expand their vocabulary and also helps build their confidence with speaking. If we have them practicing their vocabulary sharing they could end the school year with at least 100 new words!

  5. I agree Rachel, it can be difficult to teach reading, but with all these helpful and creative ideas I think we shouldn't have a problem. We just have to be eclectic and see what works best for the students!
