Readers with Special Needs and Classroom Management
Great discussion today! The focus was on students with special needs and classroom management. It is very important to understand that students with special needs need to be included in instruction like everyone else. I truly feel that more training should be required of teachers regarding strategies and accommodations. We, as college students aspiring to be educators, also should take courses that emphasize this issue. Classroom management is also essential. Unless a teacher has a good hold of their class regarding behavior, learning will be affected. Behavior is becoming a big reason why students are struggling in school.
I also enjoyed everyone's book discussions. There are so many wonderful books that we can use in our class so it was really hard to choose. What's important is that we utilize books that engage students and can help them meet learning objectives. Good job to Jen who did her practicum today. It sounded like the students enjoyed it!

I definitely agree with you about trainings and classes that aspiring educators should take because without a doubt we will encounter having a student or multiple that will have special needs and we need to be prepared to accommodate and work with that child.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you and how a general classroom teacher does need more training. However I think they need to refocus on the staff in general. We can not just give SPED students one to ones who do not know what they are dealing with. Yes, some of them get background but knowledge wise it hurts to see how many of the students really do not benefit.
ReplyDeleteThanks Rachel! The students did not want to leave for recess, Mrs. Flores had to kick them out. They wanted to stay in class to finish up their stories.Thank you for sharing your input on more training for teachers in handling students with disabilities.
ReplyDeleteRachel, you have a great point about inclusion and how there should be more awareness to teachers and future educators about students with special needs. By having more trainings, workshops, or classes about individuals with disabilities will definitely prepare a teacher.
ReplyDeleteHi Rachel, I really enjoyed our discussion on classroom management. I found it interesting because I haven't taken any classroom management courses. I know we're supposed to learn some strategies in 350, but i did not. What I found interesting about the topic was the issue on calling parents for both good and bad behavior. In perfect world, parental involvement is not an issue, but its so unfortunate that this isn't a reality.
